Bishop Hugh le Puiset built his manor house on the banks of the Skerne at the end of the 12th Century. The house was damaged during the English Civil War, but by 1703 it was converted into a workhouse. However, by the late 1800's it had mostly been torn down, and today nothing remains.

 

The building and indeed the area where the Manor once stood is reputed to be haunted by Lady Jarrett. She was the daughter of the bishop who was murdered there during the Civil War by two soldiers. They cut off her arm to steal a ring leaving the poor woman to bleed to death. Consequently, her one-armed apparition has been sighted, and her moans and rustling dress have been heard.

Prior to becoming the airport it is today, until 1964 the airfield was known as RAF Middleton St. George. During the Second World War it was used as a base for Bombers, and it is from this period that the reported apparition originates. It is claimed that the figure of a pilot, dressed in full flying gear haunts the location of the former officers mess. According to Brooks, this location is now an airport hotel.
